Activating an Office 365 Groups Backup

Using your Office 365 Global Admin account, you can activate backups for Group mailboxes (shared inbox and calendar), SharePoint document library and OneNote Notebook.

The admin user must have full permission access to read, modify, view, write, search and perform other actions needed to support the backup, restore and export functions of your data to and from the Office 365 system.

Our authorization process uses OAuth and requires a Global Admin account.

Backup creation will add account used in backup to each group as a member.

In order to activate individual user backups your Admin account must have Impersonation and be a member of the Management Group. This is done as follows:

  • At your Office 365 dashboard click on the “Admin” menu and then click on the “Exchange” menu item.
  • Go to “permissions” and double click on “Discovery Management…”
  • Add the “ApplicationImpersonation” Role to this roles group.
  • Go to “permissions” and double click on ” Organization Management…”
  • Add the “ApplicationImpersonation” Role to this roles group.

Once Impersonation has been set, from the Backups screen click on “Activate a new backup”, and then click on the Office 365 Groups line. This will take you to the Office 365 Groups Backup Task Settings.

The Office 365 Groups backup task settings form is displayed.
